Omega-3 for the heart and brain: EPA and DHA supplements

EPA and DHA are the omega-3s in oily fish. The reference is 250 mg a day: we explain how much you get from what you eat, what the studies say and what an omega-3 supplement adds when you fall short.

What makes the biggest difference, and costs nothing.

Omega-3 guide
  1. 250 mg a day

That is the EFSA adequate intake and the amount in the official claims on the heart, the brain and vision.

  2. Oily fish every week

One portion of salmon or herring a week already covers that daily average; with cod you would need more than 12 portions.

  3. Read the label

Add up the EPA and DHA per daily dose: 1,000 mg of fish oil usually means about 300 mg of omega-3.

  4. With meals

In one trial, taking it fasted reduced the absorption of EPA and DHA by 39%.

Why it contains vitamin E

Vitamin E protects the oil from oxygen

Omega-3 is a delicate oil: oxygen oxidises it and gives it a rancid smell and taste. That is why every softgel contains vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant for the oil itself.

Two drops of omega-3 oil: the one without vitamin E oxidises; the one with it stays stable.EEEWithout vitamin EOxygen oxidises itWith vitamin EThe oil stays stableOxygen
Without protection, oxygen oxidises the oil. Vitamin E slows this down and helps the omega-3 stay stable down to the last softgel.
